Facial trauma can occur as a result of an altercation, sports injury, car accident, fall, or work-related incident. Depending on the nature of your facial trauma or injury, if there is a fracture of an underlying facial bone, you may require a correction or reduction of your fracture in an operating room possibly using plates, screws and wires to stabilize the injury for good healing. Dental trauma can be caused by falls or injuries from various activities. However, it's also possible to have dental trauma due to chronic wear and tear either from biting down on objects or having cavities that weaken the tooth.
If an injury occurs in which a tooth is loosened or knocked out, it’s very important to quickly replace the tooth into its proper location in the jawbone and stabilize or splint it. The splint will stay in place for a period. Sutures may also be necessary if the gum around the traumatized tooth is lacerated. A tooth that has been severely traumatized may develop a non-vital pulp (nerve and blood supply death) and may require treatment by an endodontist for a root canal treatment.
Treatment for a Fractured Tooth
These can be minor or severe depending on what happens to the tooth. If it's only some enamel or dentin chipping, it's considered minor. Enamel and dentin are the tooth's protective layers that are on the outermost part. Dentin is a yellow layer right under the enamel, which is whiter and harder. They both protect the pulp of the tooth, which is the inner living tissue.
Your first step in evaluating a fracture of a tooth is to be examined by your dentist. They will perform different tests to assess the level of damage your tooth has endured. Digital X-rays will be necessary. If the pulp of the tooth is exposed to the outside environment, there's a high risk of infection. In these cases, your dentist will recommend a root canal. If the tooth fracture is deep, an extraction may be indicated. If you have intact good bone support, in many cases, the tooth root can be removed, and a dental implant can be placed immediately.
