When Should You Ask About Getting a Dental Crown?People with a wide variety of dental concerns can benefit from getting crowns. Read on to learn more about dental crowns and see if they may be right for you.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is custom-made cap that fits over a decayed, fractured, or otherwise weakened tooth. Crowns can be made out of metal, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or resin. Metal is the strongest of all these materials, but obviously the least natural-looking. Porcelain or ceramic is the most popular option for crowns because it is both highly durable and indistinguishable in appearance from a natural tooth.

The process for getting a dental crown typically only takes two visits to our office, and does not require surgery unless you are getting a dental implant as well. At your first appointment, we take impressions of your teeth that we send to a lab in order to manufacture your custom crown. We then prepare the compromised tooth by shaving it down, which will allow the crown to fit on top properly. When your crown is ready after one to three weeks, you will return to our office so we can check the fit and cement it in place.

What Are Dental Crowns Used For?

There are many reasons we would recommend dental crown placement. Crowns can be used to strengthen and restore teeth that are cracked, worn down, decayed, or otherwise damaged. They can conceal aesthetic concerns such as gaps in teeth, overlapping teeth, or discrepancies in size, shape, and color. Crowns are also often placed after root canal treatment for gum disease, and can even be used to completely restore a missing tooth as part of a dental bridge or combined with a dental implant.

Dental Crown Benefits

Crowns have many benefits for patients with a wide variety of dental issues. Crowns strengthen decayed and damaged teeth and protect them from further decay, infection, and damage to both your oral and overall health. They not only improve the look of your smile which can boost your self-confidence, but they restore your teeth's full function as well. Plus, crowns are easy to maintain since you can clean them the same way you clean your natural teeth. If you are considering dental crowns, call our office today to set up an appointment.
