What Are the Anesthesia Options for OMS and What is the Recommended Type?Modern advancements in the dental field have improved the surgical experience, making it more effective and comfortable. When you are scheduled for oral and maxillofacial surgery, the surgeon will explain what to expect during the procedure and the type of sedation suited for you. The oral surgeon works with you to decide on a personalized plan to enhance the procedure's comfort and safety. Here are some of the anesthesia options to consider.

Local Anesthesia

This is the most common type of sedation administered by injection into the affected area. Local anesthesia, also known as lidocaine, is preferred for minor surgical procedures, such as tooth extraction and gum treatment. It can be used with other sedation methods for a more comfortable and safer experience. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon will determine if another sedative is needed based on the severity of the condition without compromising your overall wellness.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation with Local Anesthesia

If you are scheduled for simple tooth extraction, implant placement or wisdom tooth removal, a combination of nitrous oxide and local sedation may be recommended. Nitrous oxide is administered through a nose-fitting mask, providing a calming effect while raising your pain threshold. Once the procedure is complete, the mask is removed to create a way for oxygen and eliminate the effects of nitrous oxide.

In-Office IV Sedation or General Anesthesia

Patients usually go in and out of consciousness during surgery after receiving IV sedation. Even if patients are awake during the procedure but can't respond to commands or even recollect the events during treatment. Having a friend or family member accompany you to appointments is advisable if the sedation effects don't wear off on time.

Many patients are often anxious about dental procedures, especially highly invasive procedures. However, sedation helps calm their nerves, making them feel comfortable and relaxed. Before any dental procedure, consult your dentists or dental professional on viable sedation options for peace of mind.
