Why Do You Need Vestibuloplasty

Why Do You Need VestibuloplastyOften, when you are scheduled for dental implants or dentures, you may find that there are some imperfections or flaws with the tissues that support the restorations. You may have heard people say they had a bone grafting procedure before they received their implants. You may also have heard patients say that they underwent a sinus lift before having an implant or denture placement. Vestibuloplasty is one of the procedures that may precede dental implant surgery. It is often done on the front areas of the mouth.

What is Vestibuloplasty?

This is a surgical procedure mostly done on the lower jaw, particularly in the front part. It is part of a bigger treatment plan and often involves surgically modifying your oral cavity by either extensive rearrangement of tissue or altering the gingival-mucous membrane. The procedure is necessary because of the loss of the bone tissue as well as the membranes and tissues covering that bone. Often, when your teeth fall out or are extracted, the tissue and membranes covering the bone as well as the bone itself may recede or erode.

An oral surgeon performs the procedure to correct the resorption of your bone tissue if the jawbone had degraded after tooth extraction. You may need to have the height of the bone and gum tissue corrected to allow proper support of a denture or implants. Vestibuloplasty is done in such cases whereby muscle attachments for the lower lip are placed at a lower location to help enhance the functional height of your lower jaw. Vestibular extension repair may extend from the areas inside the cheeks to those outside of the teeth.
