Dental implants and extractions are the most common oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. However, OMS has an expanded portfolio of procedural specialties, including the entire maxillofacial complex surgery. Some major procedures include anesthesia, dental implants, correction of facial skeletal defects and deformities, orthognathic surgery, cleft and palette/ craniofacial surgery and dentoalveolar surgery.
OMS surgeons and procedures
Maxillofacial surgeons undergo lengthy training on pain and anxiety control, including deep sedation, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. Mainly focusing on ambulatory anesthesia, this training enables them to administer safe surgical procedures in the dental offices or another surgical setting. Dental alveolar surgery involves the extraction of damaged, diseased or impacted (through trauma) teeth, preparing the mouth for installing dentures, treating oral infections and biopsies.
Orthognathic surgery refers to procedures administered to correct growth and developmental abnormalities of the jaws and other facial bones. These defects affect chewing, appearance, speech and general health. Dental implanting involves installing metal cylinders to replace tooth roots into the jaw bone where the bone grows and keeps them locked in place.
Cleft and craniofacial surgery correct congenital and obtained defects of the lip cleft and the palate, mainly in children. OMS also includes other procedures like repairing facial trauma, for example, fractured jaws and facial bones, management, surgically or non-surgically of temporomandibular joint disorders including the neck, head and facial and treatment of pathological conditions which includes cysts, malignant or cancerous tumors, benign, soft tissue, severe infections of the dental cavity.
OMS also includes cosmetic or reconstructive procedures to correct jaw, soft facial tissue, and facial bone defects resulting from pathology removal or trauma. This involves moving bone, skin, nerves and soft tissue to improve facial features or unwanted ageing.
