Sedation Dentistry Could Help You Get a Healthier MouthMany people neglect their dental health. In fact, it is estimated that about 10 to 20 percent of adults skip dental appointments out of fear or anxiety, and 42 percent of Americans say they do not go to the dentist as often as they know they should. Keeping up with your regular dental checkups is crucial for keeping your teeth clean, strong, and healthy. If you are one of the many people who get uncomfortable or nervous about going to the dentist, sedation dentistry could help.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation refers to giving a patient medication in order to relax them or put them to sleep during a medical or dental procedure. When it comes to dentistry, patients who have extreme fear or anxiety about going to the dentist might be able to receive sedation during a routine visit as well. There are a few different types of sedation used in dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide

Often known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a sedative that is very often used during dental procedures. You receive laughing gas through a mask. It is designed to make you feel calm and relaxed, but it does not put you to sleep.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered through a needle into your veins. With IV sedation, you are still awake during your appointment, but you will feel relaxed and experience less discomfort. Also called “conscious sedation,” IV sedation is not always available, so you should inquire about it when you make an appointment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation refers to taking a prescribed sedative medication before your appointment. When you make your appointment, we will tell you exactly what time to take the sedative. Like the above methods, you will remain awake with oral sedation, but you will feel relaxed and comfortable. IV sedation and oral sedation require you to have someone else drive you home after your appointment, but with nitrous oxide, you should be able to drive yourself home.

If you experience anxiety or discomfort at the thought of going to the dentist, sedation dentistry can help you. With different sedative options available, there is no need to neglect your dental health by skipping routine checkups or important procedures.
