Your dentist has proposed you have your wisdom teeth removed and your greatest concern is your precious cup of coffee. Since dental surgery has to involve the healing of a wound, you will have to go slowly when it comes to hot drinks.

Can You Drink Coffee Immediately After Extraction?

After tooth removal, the extraction site may experience some bleeding and swelling. The blood clot formed at the site should remain in place for the wound to heal. Hot coffee will dissolve the clot and leave a very painful dry socket. The acidity nature of coffee will also irritate the wound and prolong healing. It is also recommended not to drink hot beverages until the effect from anesthesia is completely off your system to avoid getting burned.

Is Okay If You Drink Coffee After 24 hours?

After 24 hours, the bleeding might have stopped. If you desperately need some caffeine, then you might as well drink your cup of coffee. Remember, your wound is not fully healed, so be careful when drinking hot coffee. If you cannot resist the urge, drink coffee in small sips, avoiding the wound site. Do not use a straw, as it can dislodge the blood clot to form a painful dry socket. Also, you can try drinking your coffee while warm and not hot.

When Is It Okay to Drink Coffee Freely?

You can begin drinking coffee in small amounts after about 5 days following tooth extraction. In about two weeks, you will have healed enough to the point where you can now begin taking coffee normally to your desired amount. Since you can't restrain from it, take your coffee, being cautious of the extraction site, so as not to interfere with the blood clot.

If you need your wisdom teeth removed and you are a die-hard coffee drinker, you shouldn't be worried. In our offices, you will be guided well on how to take care of your wound and still enjoy your favorite hot drink.
