Aftercare After Tooth Removal

Aftercare After Tooth RemovalNearly 75% of all American adults have had at least one tooth removed during their lifetimes. Because so many Americans have had at least one tooth removed, it is important to know how to care for your mouth after an oral surgeon removes your tooth.

Procedure After Tooth Removal

Once the dental practitioner removes your tooth, they will then decide if a bone graft is necessary. If you need a bone graft, the surgeon will place a sliver of bone into the area, place a membrane over it, and then suture it closed. If you don't need a bone graft, you may have the socket packed with medication and the suture closed. You may also simply have a gauze bandage without sutures.

What About Aftercare?

Once your tooth is removed, there are some ways you can work to prevent infection in the area after you have surgery. First, you will need to gently wash the area with antibacterial mouthwash or warm salt water at least twice a day or after each meal. Also, you'll want to take all of your prescribed medication. If you need over-the-counter pain medication, be sure and take it according to the instructions from dental practitioners. You will want to avoid strenuous activity for a couple of days after you have a tooth removed because a rapid heartbeat may slow down your healing process. Be sure and eat soft foods that don't need much chewing in order to heal.

What If There Is A Problem?

There are some warning signs if you are developing a problem with your mouth after tooth removal. First, your pain level may increase instead of decrease. Second, you may begin running a low-grade fever due to an infection. You may also notice a lump or hard area in your mouth, have a foul taste in your mouth or experience bad breath. If you think you may have an infection, you need to contact a dentist as soon as possible.
